Transforming Ceilings in Warwick – Skimming Artex for Mr Baxter

At Cooper Plastering, we recently had the pleasure of helping a wonderful client, Mr Baxter, in Warwick. Like many homes built in the late 20th century, Mr Baxter’s beautiful property featured Artex ceilings throughout the hallway, stairs, landing, two bedrooms, and bathroom. While Artex was once a popular choice, many modern homeowners now prefer a clean, smooth ceiling finish to brighten up their spaces and modernize their interiors.

The Challenge

Artex ceilings can be tricky to work with. Older patterns can be heavily textured and require careful preparation to achieve a flawless skim. Mr Baxter had received several quotes, but many suggested a messy and lengthy process. Thankfully, he reached out to Cooper Plastering — and we had the perfect plan to complete the job efficiently and neatly over just two days.

The Skimming Process

Here’s how we tackled the project:

• Preparation: First, we inspected all ceilings to check for high spots or loose Artex. Any particularly raised areas were scraped back carefully to create a more even surface.

• Taping: Cracks and any existing joins were taped with high-strength scrim tape to prevent any future movement or cracking after skimming.

• PVA Application: We applied two coats of PVA bonding agent to the Artex to ensure the new plaster adhered properly without any risk of delamination.

• Two Coat Skim: Using British Gypsum Multifinish, we applied two coats of fresh plaster to each ceiling area, working quickly and smoothly to create a flawless finish.

• Final Polish: Once the plaster began to firm up, we polished and troweled it flat, achieving a smooth, modern surface ready for painting.

The Result

In just two days, we transformed Mr Baxter’s home with beautifully flat and bright ceilings, drastically lifting the look and feel of his entire house.
