Frequently Asked Questions About Water Damaged Ceilings

Can I plaster over a damp ceiling?

No. The source of the leak must always be repaired first, and the ceiling allowed to dry thoroughly before plastering begins. Plastering over a damp ceiling can trap moisture, lead to staining and reduce the lifespan of the repair.

Will my ceiling collapse after a leak?

Not always, but it can happen if the plaster has become heavily saturated or has started to detach from the plasterboard or laths. If your ceiling is sagging, cracked or feels soft, avoid standing directly underneath it until it has been inspected.

Can a water stain simply be painted over?

Not usually. Water stains often bleed back through ordinary emulsion paint. A suitable stain-blocking primer should be used before decorating once the repair has been completed and the plaster has fully dried.

Do I always need a new ceiling?

No.

Many ceilings can be repaired successfully, while others benefit from overboarding and skimming. Every property is different, which is why we always inspect the ceiling before recommending the most appropriate solution.

How long before I can paint my repaired ceiling?

As a general guide, fresh plaster should be left for around 5–7 days to dry naturally before applying a mist coat. Cooler weather, larger ceilings or poor ventilation may increase drying times.

Will the repaired area match the rest of my ceiling?

Yes. Our aim is always to leave a smooth, seamless finish ready for decorating. Where a full skim or overboard is recommended, the finished ceiling should appear completely uniform once painted.
